'Supporting Students who Communicate Differently'
Okehampton Learning Community
The Okehampton Learning Community is a mainly rural Learning Community situated ont he edge of Dartmoor National Park. The Learning Community consists of 1 secondary school and 11 primary schools. Although only 30 minutes away from Exeter along the A30, Okehampton is fairly isolated in terms of accessing resources. Partly because of this it is a very close knit Learning Community with all schools working in partnership to achieve the same goals, namely putting students at the centre of their educational journey, enabling them to become successful and valued members of the community.

Action Plan 2011-2012
The focus for the next academic year is Speech, Language and Communication. We will be working to gether to improve provision for and raise awareness of speech, language and communication needs. This will be launched through No Pens Wednesday on 28th September 2011. We are hoping that the whole Learning Community will take part in acivities to promote different ways of learning that explore language in alternative and creative ways that do not rely heavily on writing (hence no pens!).
Spring Term
Our focus in terms of training this term is on Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Schools will be contacted in the next couple of weeks regarding training opportunities.
If you or your school has identified an area where training would be beneficial, on any aspect of Special Educational Needs or Behaviour, please contact me ([email protected]) and I will look into it on behalf of the Learning Community. Similarly, if you would like to recommend training, please do so.
Completion of the Sensory Room
As part of the drive to support students within their own Learning Community, and expand the provision on offer, a new Sensory room has just been completed at Okehampton College for the use of all students in the Learning Community. The room and redecoration was provided by the college, and the funds for the specialist equipment were raised by Community Lynx. The whole Learning Community is extremely grateful to those charities, namely the Mary Budding Trust and the United Okehampton Charities for their extremely generous donations which enabled such a fantastic resource and support mechanism to be available for all children in the Learning Community. This resource is available for the whole Learning Community and to book a session or sessions in the room, or to find out more, please contact Charlie Edwards or Jen Harding via the College.
